It’s the beginning of autumn, and as the weather drops colder, it’s time to start planning ahead for the winter months.
The correct preparation during this time of the year is crucial to having a lush, green garden full of lovely plants and features for next year.
Right now, the soil will be especially moist and warm, making it the perfect time to lay new turf. Turf can also be laid in spring, or any other time of the year for that matter, but we would always recommend laying it in the autumn due to the milder weather and optimal soil conditions.
If you lay turf during the summer months, high temperatures can cause the turf to dry out. In the winter months, if the ground is too frosty or wet it can also be difficult to lay turf.
It is important during the autumn that your turf is laid fairly quickly (within 36 hours) to avoid it drying out. In summer this time is greatly reduced due to a higher risk of the sod drying out.
After your turf has been laid we would recommend not walking on it shortly after. It is important that fresh turf is given time to settle, so that the roots can descend into the soil, allowing the grass to begin to grow.
We also recommend refraining from mowing your lawn after it has been laid for as long as possible. If the turf has been installed in autumn, it shouldn’t really need mowing much through the winter months.
This will leave the grass more time to grow and settle properly, giving you a lush green lawn right in time for the spring.
